Choosing the Right Internet Service Provider (ISP) in Santa Cruz County
Choosing the right Internet Service Provider (ISP) can be daunting if you’re new to the area or unfamiliar with the available options.
We’ll review the common (and less common) ISP options for home and business customers.
Spoiler alert: For most users, if AT&T Fiber (not DSL, not wireless, not “air”) is available at your address, we recommend choosing it (not sponsored in any way).
AT&T Fiber (as of 2025) in Santa Cruz typically offers the best price and performance compared to other providers, with some exceptions. This may change in the future, but for the past few years, it has been the top choice in Santa Cruz.
The Main Internet Service Providers in Santa Cruz
The primary ISPs in Santa Cruz are Xfinity (Comcast), AT&T fiber, and Spectrum.
-
For some addresses, multiple ISPs are available.
-
For others, only one of the main ISPs is available. If the only available main ISP offers extremely low bandwidth or poor customer service, you can explore “less common” providers (e.g., satellite, 4G, or 5G internet).
-
Avoid assuming you know which ISP is available at your address without checking with the providers. In fact, some streets are split, with one half served by one provider and the other half by another. Always check availability in a specific address.
-
Availability can change quickly. Even if AT&T fiber (for example) wasn’t available at your address last week, it might be available today.
You can check availability online for some providers:
-
For AT&T: Visit Get the Fastest Fiber Optic Internet Service | AT&T Fiber and enter your address.
-
For Xfinity (Comcast): Visit Xfinity Plans, Pricing and Offers - Check Xfinity Availability and enter your address.
-
For Spectrum: Visit Spectrum - Internet, Mobile, Cable TV and Home Phone and enter your address.
Pro tip: You can only be certain an ISP can provide service after a technician installs the internet at your home or business. We’ve seen cases where a provider confirmed availability online or over the phone, but the technician on-site discovered technical issues that prevented installation.
AT&T Fiber
As mentioned earlier, if AT&T Fiber is available at your address, it’s usually the best choice.
AT&T Fiber typically offers the lowest prices (compared to Xfinity and Spectrum) and higher bandwidth, especially regarding upload speeds.
-
For AT&T fiber, you’ll likely need to schedule an AT&T technician to install the router (gateway) at your home (some other providers allow “self-installation” without a technician).
-
AT&T requires you to use their gateway, but you can connect your own router “on top” of it.
-
From our customer surveys, AT&T Fiber is less likely to add “unknown undesired fees” (AKA “junk fees”) compared to some other providers.
Xfinity
Xfinity is our (and our customers’) second favorite ISP after AT&T Fiber.
-
With Xfinity, you’ll need to:
a) rent a gateway (router)
b) OR, you can use your own modem, router and Wi-Fi to avoid rental fees. -
Using your own router is typically more cost-effective over the long term, with a return on investment (ROI) in about 2–3 years.
-
Quick calculation: Modem (~$100) + Wi-Fi (~$80) + installation labor (~$240) ≈ 2–3 years of renting a gateway from Xfinity.
-
-
If you rent from Xfinity and the previous homeowner or renter had Xfinity before you, you might be able to pick up the gateway at an Xfinity store the same day, which is an advantage over AT&T fiber, for example.
Less Common Internet Service Providers in Santa Cruz
If AT&T Fiber, Xfinity, or Spectrum aren’t available at your address, Cruzio may be an option.
Check availability at Cruzio Internet: Wireless, Fiber, Broadband, Colo, Offices.
Cruzio is a smaller, local ISP. While the service they provide in some locations is extremely slow (e.g., 4 Mbps download speed), certain addresses can get decent performance.
The Least Preferred Internet Service Providers in Santa Cruz
5G networks and satellite internet are generally less ideal compared to the main ISPs but may be your only option in some cases.
-
The only way to know the exact speed at a specific location is to test it.
-
Avoid long-term contracts without first testing download and upload speeds at your home or even in a specific room.
-
ISP or wireless provider “coverage maps” are often inaccurate or misleading, to say the least.
-
A reliable way to test speeds is using Map | CoverageMap.com, which shows actual speed tests for specific areas (small groups of houses) with near 100% accuracy.
